Well, here is the first post in my new poker blog (duhh) I decided to make this blog based upon inspiration from some other beginners blogging on the 2+2 forums. This isnt really for anyone else to read and criteque, more for me to follow my development as a poker player as I (hopefully) move up the stakes and become a winning player.
A little background:
I started playing poker live about 2 years ago and have had good success at it. I play at a lot of home games as well as I often play at casino 1/2 tables. Based upon my live success, I figured I was a good poker player, why not play online a lot and make some cash! WRONG! Online poker is 100x harder then live poker. The main 2 reasons are this: live poker you get about 30-40 hands an hour. So lets say you play for 3hrs 3 days a week. So you get 360 hands a week. So that equates to 18,720 hands a year. As great as that sounds, that SUCKS! Playing online you get people who play 18k hands a week easily! Multiply that per year and you get almost a million hands a year. So one, they just have a LOT more experience then you can get playing live. Secondly and most importantly are the difference in available levels of play. When you play live the lowest level is 1/2, so thats where everyone starts. Which means its a lot easier to play as you have a lot of beginners. Online you start at .01/.02 and then move up through another 10 levels before you get to 1/2 poker. See the difference? By the time someone online gets to 1/2 poker, they have already been crushing all the players at lower levels.
Anyway, I started playing online poker about 6 months ago just for fun. About 2 months ago I decided I wanted to start playing seriously, and this month (as of Jan 1) I decided the time for me screwing around with poker was over and it was time to win. I invested in a lot of software necessary to play and signed up for the poker coaching site CardRunners. Within the first day the CR site completely changed my playstyle. I previously played as a LAG player and had NO concept of position and pre-flop bet sizing. After signing up at CR I became a TAG player and began to win a lot more then I ever had.
Either way, it was evident that the things I were doing were going to help my poker game tremendously. It was also obvious that I have some glaring leaks that I must fix if I ever want to be a constantly winning player. The good thing is, I am serious enough about poker that I plan to invest the time and effort into doing just that. Poker for me is a large part of my life. I go to sleep things about it and wake up in the morning thinking about it. The only 3 other things in my life besides poker right now are sex, money and anime. For me, winning at poker isnt some fad, I truly want to do it.
